Two glorious days to discover birds in Ecuador's imposing Andean valleys, and, mystical could forests forests. Be prepared to delve into Ecuador's most biologically-diverse birding reserves and eco-lodges to look out for the highest amount of iconic and spectacular bird and hummingbird species. DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 1

5:30AM Pick-up from any hotel in Quito.

Birding San Jorge Eco-lodge Quito, Pichincha Volcano Road & Old Nono-Mindo Road:
Our journey begins with a hot cup of Ecuadorian coffee/chocolate by our festive "Cucayo" breakfast room at San Jorge Eco-lodge Quito. After breakfast, we start birding around our eco-lodge's beautiful gardens and trails.San Jorge Quito Breakfast Room Some of the early morning highlights will include the Tufted Tit-tyrant, Azara's Spinetail, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Blue-and-yellow Tanager, Red-crested Cotinga, and, the Streak-throated Bush-Tyrant. After birding the trails, we head to the front patio where a set of hummingbird feeders await us with some spectacular hummingbird species including the Green-tailed Trainbearer, Sparkling Violetear, Tyrian Metaltail, Shining Sunbeam, White-bellied Woodstar, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Sword-billed Hummingbird, and, with some luck, the Purple-backed Thornbill.

After a morning packed with inter-Andean species, we drive and bird along a charming road that runs through the lower slope of Pichincha Volcano. Birding Andean Landscape 1along this road is crucial to record several upper-Andean specialist including the stunning Golden-crowned Tanager, Blue-backed Conebill, Black-chested Mountain-Tanager, White-browed Spinetail, Undulated Antpitta, Chestnut-naped Antpitta, Rufous Antpitta, Barred Fruiteater, Andean Pygmy-Owl, White-throated Screech-Owl, Golden-breasted Puffleg, Great Sapphirewing, and, many more. The slopes of Pichincha Volcano are home to the critically endangered Black-breasted Puffleg, with a bit of luck we might see this rarity. At around noon, we have our boxed lunch surrounded by stunning Andean landscape to then begin our descend down the "Old Nono-Mindo Road" or "Hummingbird Route" which connects the imposing Andean ridges with the lushy cloud forest of Tandayapa.

We will slowly descend and bird along the old Nono-Mindo road, making strategic stops to look out for a wide variety of birds including the highly sought-after Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, Plate billed Mountain Toucan 4 Plushcap, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant, Slaty-backed Chat-Tyrant, Andean Guan, Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper, Masked Trogon, Beautiful Jay, Collared Inca, Mountain Velvetbreast, Burrowing Owl, Western Hemispingus, Grass-green Tanager, White-rumped Hawk, and, many more. In the late afternoon, we make one last stop to delight our eyes with Ecuador's most iconic and stunning bird species, the Andean Cock-of-the-rock. In this location, several males gather to engage in competitive display (LEK). We will see them fly around and listen to their raucous call. With a bit of luck, the cocks will be at a very close distance, if not, we will will use our spotting scope to fully appreciate this bird's vivid color.

DAY 2

Birding San Jorge Eco-lodge Tandayapa - Hummingbird Sanctuary:
We wake up in the heart of the famous Tandayapa valley, a charming little valley that holds the world record for the highest number of hummingbird species recorded in a year, 42 species! We begin the day birding the 4 observation decks overlooking our private reserve. We will have the opportunity to see an incredible amount of bird species before breakfast and without having to engage in much walking.san jorge eco lodge tandayapa small The bird feeders and fruit trees surrounding the breakfast room and the observation decks are visited by multicolored bird species like the Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager, Toucan Barbet, Red-headed Barbet, Golden-headed Quetzal, Crested Quetzal, Streak-capped Treehunter, Squirrel Cuckoo, Three-striped Warbler, White-winged Becard, Metallic-green Tanager, Masked Trogon, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Pale-mandibled Aracari, Golden-naped Tanager, Golden Tanager, Flame-faced Tanager, Silver-throated Tanager, Swallow Tanager, and, many more. Additionally, the hummingbird feeders in front of the breakfast room are visited by abounding hummingbird species, including, the Tawny-bellied Hermit, Western Emerald, Gorgeted Sunangel, Wedge-billed Hummingibird, Purple-throated Woodstar, Purple-bibbed Whitetip, and, of course, the  iconic Booted Racket-tail and Violet-tailed Sylph.

After a very birdy morning, we have breakfast, and, for the rest of the day, we will explore several trails at our private cloud forest reserve. Trail birding will deliver different bird species includingViolet tailed Sylph Tandayapa the Scaled Antpitta, Ochre-breasted Antpitta, Rufous-breasted Antthrush, White-winged Tanager, Beryl-spangled Tanager, Ringed Kingfisher, Chestnut-breasted Chlorophonia, Immaculate Antbird, Plain Antvireo, Uniform Antshrike, Russet-crowned Warbler, Black-and-chestnut Eagle, Bat Falcon, Barred Hawk, White-throated Quail-Dove, Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, Cloud-Forest Pygmy Owl, and, with some luck, the enchanted White-faced Nunbird, and, the secretive Wattled Guan. We will have lunch at our open-air restaurant overlooking the impressive valley of Tandayapa.

Our second chapter takes us to Ecuador's Lower Amazon basin (Amazon lowlands), acknowledged as the most biologically diverse spot on earth. This region stretches from 800m (2600ft) all the way down to 300m (980ft) and its made up of soaring millennial trees, magical flooded forests, glassy oxbow lakes, and, the islands of the meandering Napo river. A whole new world of raptors, antbirds, toucans, barbets, cotingas, tanagers, and many more await us in Ecuador's Amazon jungle!

DAY 1

Birding BAND NEW! Sumaco Bajo Wildlife Reserve:
 After breakfast we drive for two hours to our BRAND NEW!  Sumaco Bajo Wildlife Reserve in Amazonia's lowlands.  We'll start birdwatching  along the main road that leads to our reserve. Cream colored Woodpecker 2 Magic Birding Flocks of parrots, macaws, and, parakeets will welcome us. Bare necked Fruitcrow 2 Magic BirdingWe will look out for  Dusky-headed Parakeet, White-eyed Parakeet, Orange-winged Parrot, Yellow-crowed Parrot, Mealy Parrot, Blue-headed Parrot, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, and Dusky-billed Parrotlet. This amazing road will also offer us other birds like the Great Antshrike, Fasciated Antshrike, White-shouldered Antshrike, Black Antbird, Grey Antbird, Bare-throated Fruitcrow, Cream-colored Woodpecker, Scale-breasted Woodpecker, Red-stained Woodpecker, Little Woodpecker, Lafresnaye's Piculet, Red-crowned Ant-Tanager, Violaceous Jay, Masked Crimson Tanager,  and, many more.

We arrive for lunch at our open-air restaurant to then continue birdwatching around the lodge's pond and lagoon. We will look-out for the Greater Ani, Amazon Kingfisher, Ringed Kingfisher, Capped Heron, Olive Oropendola, Black-capped Donacobius, Black-capped Becard, Piratic Flycather, Orange-backed Troupial, White-chested Puffbird, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, Rufous-breasted Piculet, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Yellow-breasted Flycatcher, Orange-fronted Plushcrown, Amazonian Grosbeak, Yellow-backed Tanager, Yellow-green Vireo, Magpie Tanager, Fulvous-crested Tanager, and several other species.

DAY 2

Birding BRAND NEW! Sumaco Bajo Wildlife Reserve:
In the morning we'll start birding from our sensational canopy tower rising at 40 meters (130 ft). We'll appreciate a 360 degree view of the upper level of the forest and look out for up to 6 different macaw species!Spangled Cotinga 2 Magic BirdingBlack bellied Cuckoo 2 Magic Birding including: Scarlet Macaw, Red-And-Green Macaw, Blue-And-Yellow Macaw, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Red-bellied Macaw, and the endangered Military Macaw. Other target species will include, the Striped Woodcreeper, Long-billed Woodcreeper, Black-headed Parrot, Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Scale-breasted Woodpecker, Lettered Aracari, White-throated Toucan, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Golden-collared Toucanet, Wing-barred Piprites, Turquoise-browed Tanager, Paradise Tanager, Turquoise Tanager, Black-bellied Cuckoo, Gilded Barbet, Scarlet-crowned Barbet, Yellow-bellied Dacnis, King Vulture, Red-throated Caracara, Plum-throated Cotinga, Spangled Cotinga, and with a bit of luck the Purple-throated Cotinga, and the magestic Harpy Eagle.

DAY 3

Bird Photo Coca Oxbow Lake:
 After breakfast we drive for two hours to Coca Oxbow Lake. With the help of a wide  canoe we will slowly birdwatch along the edges of this massive lagoon crowded with wildlife.Horned Screamer Magic Birding One of the target birds for this place is the strange "unicorn bird" Horned Screamer which is fairly common here but very rare elsewhere. We will also look out for the Zig-Zag Heron,Hoatzin Magic Birding Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Agami Heron, Least Bittern, White-eared Jacamar, Wattled Jacana, Azure Gallinule, Ecuadorian Cacique, Red-capped Cardinal, Hoatzin, Snail Kite, Yellow-headed Caracara, White-fronted Nunbird, Uniform Crake, Long-billed Gnatwren, Solitary Cacique, Grey-cowled Wood-Rail, Laughing Falcon, and several other lagoon-specialist bird species. Several mokey species can also be seen along he edge of the lake, like the Squirrel Monkey and, the world's smallest monkey species, the Pygmy Marmoset.

After lunch we'll drive and birdwatch along the road that leads to Napo's riverbank. We'll look out for the White-chinned Jacamar, Channel-billed Toucan, Black-fronted Nunbird, White-lored Antpitta, Black-banded Crake, Casqued Casique, Rufous-bellied Euphonia, Double-banded Pygmy-Tyrant, Fulvous-Shrike Tanager, Southern Lapwing, Amazonian Violaceous Trogon and many more. In the late afternoon we'll use our motor boat to head back to the Eco-lodge doing little stops along the Napo river to look out for the Brown Jacamar, Swallow-winged Puffbird, Pied Lapwing, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Long-tailed Potoo, Great Potoo, and with some luck the Nocturnal Currasow.
Overnight: Amazonia Eco-lodge.

DAY 4

Bird Photo Amazon Parrot Clay Lick & Amazon Canopy Towers:
After breakfast we visit another fabulous canopy tower rising at 60 meter (195 feet). We'll look out for the Yellow-browed Tody-Flycatcher, White-eyed Tody-Tyrant, Hoatzin Magic BirdingGreat Jacamar,Wire tailed Manakin Magic Birding Purplish Jacamar, Purple-throated Fruitcrow, Many-banded Aracari, Ivory-billed Aracari, Red-necked Woodpecker, Golden-green Woodpecker, Pink-throated Becard, Elegant, Yellow-crowned Elaenia, Rufous-tailed Flatbill, Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper, Slate-colored Hawk, White-browed Purpletuft, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Black-tailed Trogon, White-necked Puffbird, Pied Puffbird,  Citron-bellied Attila, Grayish Mourner, Chestnut Woodpecker, Olivaceous Flatbill, Lemon-throated Barbet.

After enjoying the wildlife that inhabits the higher stratum of the forest, we'll explore a charming jungle trail that follows a crystal-clear creek. This path can offer fantastic bird species including the Cinereous Tinamou, Rufous-tailed Stipplethroat, Rio Suno Antwren, Lunulated Antbird, Peruvian Warbling Antbird, Banded Antbird, Rusty-belted Tapaculo, Black-banded Woodcreeper, Ash-throated Gnateater, Chestnut-belted Gnateater, Ringed Antpitpit, Musician Wren, Blue-backed Manakin, and high chances of a White-plummed Antbird and a Hairy-crested Antbird. Next, we'll head to another fabulous parrot clack lick. Here, on warm days, massive flocks of Cobalt-winged Parakeets, Orange-cheeked Parrots, Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlets, and, up to 16 scarlet macaws will descend all at once to drink from a little stream right in front of our hide. Big groups of White-lipped Peccaries, Spider Monkey, and even the mighty Jaguar have also been spotted in this place in broad daylight.

DAY 5

Bird Photo Amazon Parrot Clay Lick & Yasuni Canopy Towers:
After breakfast we'll use our motor boat to navigate down the Napo river and get close to the Parrot Clay Lick. Here, we'll look out for very large flocks of Orange-winged Parrots, Yellow-crowned Parrots, Orange-cheeked Parrot, Dusky-billed Parrotlets, and Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlets feeding on the clay wall. We arrive to our eco-lodge and start shooting from our bird hide where several cloud forest beauties can be photographed. Masked Trogon 4We will go after the Masked Trogon, Squirell Cuckoo, Slate-throated Whitestar, Streak-capped Treehunter, Dusky-capped Flycatcher, Buff-fronted Foliage-Gleaner, Golden-naped Tanager, Black-chested Tanager, Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager, and, with a bit of luck, the Ochre-breasted Antpitta. Seasonally, the wild avocado trees around the hide attract two fabuous species, the Crested Quetzal, and, the Golden-headed Quetzal.

After breakfast we begin shooting from our 4 observation decks overlooking our prime cloud forest reserveViolet tailed Sylph Tandayapa  A set of bird feeders and hummingbird feeders in front of the main deck  are visited by multicolored bird species like the Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager, crimson rumped toucant tandayapa Red-headed Barbet,  Three-striped Warbler, White-winged Becard,  Metallic-green Tanager, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Pale-mandibled Aracari, Golden-naped Tanager, Golden Tanager, Flame-faced Tanager, Orange-bellied Euphonia, and, many, more. Additionally, we will do hummingbird photography as our feeders are visited by abounding hummingbird species including the iconic Booted Racket-tail and the Violet-tailed Sylph. The banana feeders at this place are also seasonally visited by the iconic Toucan Barbet, and, the Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan.

After lunch at our open-air restaurant overlooking the impressive valley of Tandayapa, we set-up our  hummingbird multi-flash setup to get high-speed flight shots of the following hummingbirds: Western Emerald, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Andean Emerald, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Buff-tailed Coronet, White-necked Jacobin, Purple-throated Woodstar, Purple-bibbed Whitetip, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Brown Violetear, Green Violetear, Green-crowned Woodnymph, and, the much sought-after Booted Racket-tail and Violet-tailed Sylph.

Our first chapter covers the Upper Amazon basin, stretching from 3000 m (9800 feet) all the way down to 1200 m (4000 feet). We will explore the Amazon's  mountainous region made up of lush montane forest, Masked Mountain Tanager deep-green foothill forests, and, crystal clear rivers that feed into the largest tributary of the Amazon river. This region is exceptionally good for birding for its highly sought-after mountain-toucans, mountain-tanagers, fruiteaters, tanagers, jays, caciques, antbirds, and, notably, for its abounding hummingbird species, most of which don't occur in the Choco slope (5 & 8 day trips). This region is unfortunately missed by most birders, who, unknowingly skip this must-see! birding area by flying directly from Quito to Coca city into the Amazon lowlands which we offer as a separate trip.

DAY 1

Pick-up from Quito airport and transfer to San Jorge Eco-lodge Quito.
Overnight: San Jorge Eco-lodge Quito.

DAY 2

Birding Papallacta Pass, Cayambe-Coca National Park & Cuyuja River:
Now that we've covered the most birdy areas of the Choco slope, we embark into an essentially new world, the enchanted forests of the Upper Amazon Basin.  After breakfast we start driving towards the Amazonia slope gateway, the famous Papallacta Pass. Blue mantled Thornbill Magic Birding This stunning treeline forest is home to several jewels including the Rainbow bearded Thornbill3 Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Red-rumped Bush-Tyrant, Bar-bellied Woodpecker, White-chinned Thistletail, Many-stripped Canastero, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Blue-mantled Thornbill, Viridian Metaltail, Giant Conebill, Paramo Seedeater, Paramo Tapaculo, and, many more. Papallacta Pass it's also one of the best places to see the Andean Bear. We continue birding along the Papallacta Lagoon to record several aquatic bird species that will not occur elsewhere including the Yellow-billed Pintail, Andean Teal, Neotropic Cormorant, and with some luck, the elusive Noble Snipe. At around noon, we will be rewarded with a delicious boxed lunch surrounded by another sublime Andean landscape.

After lunch we drive for 40 minutes to Cayambe-Coca National Park. This dwarf Andean forest is home to very localized bird species such as the Masked Mountain-Tanager, that can be seasonally fairly common to see. We will focus on getting the Mountain Avocetbill,Torrent Duck Black-backed Bush-Tanager, Pale-naped Brush-Finch, Black-headed Hemispingus, Black-capped Hemispingus, Powerful Woodpecker,Agile Tit-Tyrant, Crowned Chat-Tyrant, Ash-colored Tapaculo, Golden-crowned Tanager, and, a second chance at the elegant Plushcap. After Cayambe Coca, we descend to Cuyuja river and we spend the rest of the afternoon looking for the Torrent Duck, Red-hooded Tanager, Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Black-eared Hemispingus, Slaty Brush-Finch, Citrine Warbler, and with a bit of luck, the Andean Potoo. We will also make a stop by a hummingbird feeding station to look out for the Chesnut-breasted Coronet, Collared Inca, Long-tailed Sylph, Tourmaline Sunangel, and, casually, a Glowing Puffleg. Overnight: Baeza Valley Eco-lodge.

DAY 3

Birding  San Jorge Cosanga-Yanayacu Bird Reserve & Upper Sumaco 
After breakfast we drive for 40 minutes to our San Jorge Cosanga-Yanayacu Bird Reserve.  Our exuberant protected reserve is located in the heart of the Cosanga-Yanayacu Christmas Bird Count Area with a world record of 600 bird species recorded in one day. White capped Tanager 3 Here, we will bird along "Las Caucheras Road" and some of our target species will include:  Chestnut-breasted Chlorophonia, Grass-green Tanager, Andean Motmot, Saffron-crowned Tanager, Yellow-billed Cacique, Mountain Cacique, Streak-headed Antbird, Emerald Toucanet, Andean Cock of the rock EAST Magic BirdingRufous-headed Pygmy-Tyrant, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Dusky Piha, Capped Conebill, Fawn-breasted Tanager, White-capped Parrot, White-capped Tanager, Lemon-browed Flycatcher, White-bellied Antpitta,  Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, and, with a bit of luck, the elusive Wattled Guan. After lunch we explore the Upper Sumaco road to look out for beautiful species such as the Sunbittern, Grey-mantled Wren, Golden-eared Tanager, Short-tailed Antthrush, Long-tailed Tapaculo, Spot-winged Antbird, Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Red-breasted Meadowlark, Southern Lapwing, Chestnut-bellied Seedeater, White-tipped Sicklebill, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Green-backed Hillstar, and, the tiny Gorgeted Woodstar. In the late afternoon we'll visit one of the best Andean Cock-of-the-rock LEK in Ecuador to appreciate the amazing color of the eastern subspecies. Overnight: Baeza Valley Eco-lodge

DAY 4

Birding BRAND NEW! San Jorge Guacamayos Bird Reserve & San Jorge Sumaco Bajo
After breakfast we drive for 45 minutes to explore San Jorge Guacamayos, one of Ecuador's most biodiverse and pristine natural reserves. Our blessed location between Antisana National Park and Napo-Galeras National Park will allow us to see flocks of birds from both the montane and the foothill forests. Rufous crowned Tody Flycatcher San Jorge GuacamayosWe will look out for the Paradise Tanager, Greenish Puffleg, Booted Racket-tail, Collared Inca, Bronzy Inca, Booted Racket tail Magic Birding Napo Sabrewing, Grey-chinned Hermit, Oleaginous Hemispingus, Deep-blue Flowerpiercer, White-rimmed Brush-Finch, Grass-green Tanager, Blue-browed Tanager, and, with some luck the magnificient Greater Scythebill, and the Scarlet-breasted Fruiteater. We'll have a delicious lunch at our open-air restaurant and we'll continue  exploring different trails to look out for the Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, Slate-crowned Antpitta, Blue-naped Chlorophonia, Olivaceous Piha, Golden-collared Honeycreeper, Brown-billed Scythebill, Barred Antthrush, Rufous-crested Tanager, Vermilion Tanager, Black-chested Fruiteater, Black-streaked Puffbird, Yellow-vented Woodpecker, and with a bit of luck the Solitary Eagle, and, the Peruvian Antpitta. Overnight: Baeza Valley Eco-lodge

DAY 5

Birding Archidona Hummingbird Reserve
After breakfast we drive for 30 minutes to Archidona Hummingbird Reserve. Extensive gardens covered with flowering vervenas are home to numerous hummingbird species that occur at this elevation only. Wire crested Thorntail Magic BirdingWe will look out for the iconic Wire-crested Throntail, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Rufous-throated Sapphire, Napo Sabrewing, Rufous-vented Whitetip, Black-throated Brilliant, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Spangled Coquette Black-throated Brilliant, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Green Hermit, Ecuadorian Piedtail, Pink-throated Brilliant, and, the amazing Spangled Coquette. We'll have a delicious boxed lunch and we'll continue exploring the reserve for other birds including the Fiery-throated Fruiteater, Lafresnaye's Piculet, Plain-backed Antpitta, Wing-banded Wren, White-crowned Manakin, Coppery-chested Jacamar, Ecuadorian Tyrannulet, Spotted Tanager, Orange-breasted Falcon, Chestnut-crowned Gnateater, and the endangered Military Macaw. Overnight: N/A - 3:00PM transfer to any hotel in Quito area or to Quito airport.

OVERVIEW

To dramatically boost your birding experience in Ecuador, welcome to the exploration of our privileged Amazon region. While the Amazon basin falls within several South American countries, a singularity occurs in Ecuador's Amazonia. The Equator line, the Andes mountain range, and, our Amazon territory blend together to give place to the most bio-diverse ecosystem in the world! Brace yourself for a birding trip jam-packed with unique bird species.

Our first chapter covers the Upper Amazon basin, stretching from 3000 m (9800 feet) all the way down to 1200 m (4000 feet). We'll explore the Amazon's  mountainous region made up of lush montane forest, Masked Mountain Tanagerdeep-green foothill forests, and, crystal clear rivers that feed into the largest tributary of the Amazon river. This region is exceptionally good for birding as its inhabited by highly sought-after mountain-toucans, mountain-tanagers, fruiteaters, tanagers, jays, caciques, antbirds, and, notably, for its abounding hummingbird species, most of which don't occur in the Choco slope (5 & 8 day trips). This region is unfortunately missed by most birders, who, unknowingly skip this must-see! birding area by flying directly from Quito to Coca city into the Amazon lowlands which we offer as a separate trip.

DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 9

Birding Papallacta Pass, Cayambe-Coca National Park & Cuyuja River:
Now that we've covered the most birdy areas of the Choco slope, we embark into an essentially new world, the enchanted forests of the Upper Amazon Basin.  After breakfast we start driving towards the Amazonia slope gateway, the famous Papallacta Pass. Blue mantled Thornbill Magic Birding This stunning treeline forest is home to several jewels including the Rainbow bearded Thornbill3 Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Red-rumped Bush-Tyrant, Bar-bellied Woodpecker, White-chinned Thistletail, White-browed Spinetail, Many-stripped Canastero, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Blue-mantled Thornbill, Viridian Metaltail, Red-rumped Bush-Tyrant, Giant Conebill, Paramo Seedeater, Paramo Tapaculo, and, many more. Papallacta Pass it's also one of the best places to see the Andean Bear and the Andean Tapir. We continue birding along the Papallacta Lagoon to record several aquatic bird species that will not occur elsewhere including the Yellow-billed Pintail, Andean Teal, and with some luck, the elusive Noble Snipe. At around noon, we will be rewarded with a delicious boxed lunch surrounded by another sublime Andean landscape.

After lunch we drive for 40 minutes to Cayambe-Coca National Park. This dwarf Andean forest is fantastic for birding as its home to very localised bird species such as the Masked Mountain-Tanager, that can be seasonally fairly common to see. We'll focus on briding along the main trail to get the Mountain Avocetbill,Torrent Duck Black-backed Bush-Tanager, Pale-naped Brush-Finch, Purple-backed Thornbill, Andean Pygmy Owl, Black-headed Hemispingus, Black-capped Hemispingus, Powerful Woodpecker, Agile Tit-Tyrant, Lacrimose Mountain-Tanager, Crowned Chat-Tyrant, Plushcap, Ash-colored Tapaculo, Golden-crowned Tanager, and, with a bit of luck, the Crescent-faced Antpitta. After Cayambe Coca, we descend to Cuyuja river and we spend the rest of the afternoon birdwatching along the river trail to look out for the Torrent Duck, Red-hooded Tanager, Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Black-eared Hemispingus, Slaty Brush-Finch, Citrine Warbler, Collared Inca,  Tourmaline Sunangel, Glowing Puffleg and, the Andean Potoo. Overnight: BRAND NEW! DAY 10

Birding BRAND NEW! San Jorge Guacamayos Birding Reserve
After breakfast, we explore our brand new San Jorge Guacamayos birding reserve, nestled in the heart of Ecuador's lush Upper Amazonia. Our reserve, located between Antisana National Park and Napo-Galeras Sumaco National Park, is hailed as on the of the most biodiverse and pristine natural reserves in Ecuador. After a delightful lunch, we continue our thrilling birding adventure with careful consideration of weather conditions. As we select a trail, we anticipate the opportunity to spot extraordinary bird species like the Yellow-throated Tanager, Brown-billed Scythebill, Dusky Piha, White-bellied Antpitta, Slate-crowned Antpitta, Oleaginous Hemispingus, Rufous-bellied Nighthawk, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, and with some luck, the Barred Antthrush and the Greater Scythebill. Overnight: BRAND NEW! DAY 11

Birding San Jorge Guacamayos Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek & San Jorge Cosanga
After breakfast, we take a leisurely 5-minute walk to our exclusive Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek nestled in a charming quebrada next to the lodge. After the mesmerizing spectacle of the cock-of-the-rock, Andean Cock of the rock EAST Magic Birding we'll bird along the trails surrounding the lek where we'll discover superb species such as the Black-streaked Puffbird, Coppery-chested Jacamar, Golden-winged Manakin, Black-billed Treehunter, White-backed Fire-eye, White-streaked Antvireo, and with some luck, the elusive Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper. After lunch, we'll drive for 20 minutes to San Jorge Cosanga birding reserve, one of Ecuador's upper Amazonia most treasured birding reserves. Rufous crowned Tody Flycatcher San Jorge Guacamayos Our exuberant protected birding reserve is located in the heart of the Cosanga-Yanayacu Christmas Bird Count Area with a world record of 600 bird species recorded in one day.   Here, we'll birdwatch along "Las Caucheras Road" and some of our target species will include:  Chestnut-breasted Chlorophonia, Grass-green Tanager, Andean Motmot, Yellow-billed Cacique, Mountain Cacique, Rufous-crowned Tody-Flycatcher, Rufous-headed Pygmy-Tyrant, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Dusky Piha, Capped Conebill, Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, and, with a bit of luck, the elusive Wattled Guan. On our return journey to the lodge, we'll make a delightful stop by a river, aiming to spot the Andean Duck, Torrent Tyrannulet, White-capped Dipper, and perhaps, the Fasciated Tiger-Heron. Overnight: BRAND NEW!
